What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis refers to inflammation of your plantar fascia, which is the thick bowstring-like ligament on the sole of your foot that connects your heel to your toes. Your plantar fascia is designed to support the arch of your foot and act as a shock absorber while you walk or run.

Excess tension or stress on the plantar fascia leads to the development of small tears in the tissue. If you continue to stress your damaged ligament, you may irritate the tears, which leads to inflammation and pain.

You are at greater risk of developing plantar fasciitis if you engage in activities that place a lot of stress on your feet, such as long-distance running or ballet dancing. You can also develop heel pain if you spend a lot of time on your feet walking or standing on hard surfaces. ‘

Obesity, a high foot arch, and altered gait are also risk factors for the development of plantar fasciitis.

How is plantar fasciitis diagnosed?

At Comprehensive Podiatric Care, Dr. Lynn can diagnose plantar fasciitis after reviewing your symptoms and medical history and performing a physical exam focused on your foot. To rule out other causes of your pain, the team may request diagnostic tests, such as an X-ray or MRI.

The diagnostic images may identify bone spurs, a source of heel pain that can occur with your plantar fasciitis.

How is plantar fasciitis treated?

Treatment for your plantar fasciitis depends on the severity of your symptoms, the underlying cause of your heel pain, and your overall health. Initially, Dr. Lynn may recommend:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Night splints
